The Yakut originates in Yakutia of northern and central Siberia, Russia. There are actually three different types of the Yakut. The Northern original Yakut also known as the Middle Kolyma or Verkhoyansk horse is considered the most valuable horse. The smaller southern type was not crossbred with the improved breeds. The larger southern type was used for improvement of the Yakut. The larger southern type of Yakut can be found in many regions of central Yakutia, including Orjonikidze, Yakutsk, Namtsi, and Amga regions. In these places trotters and heavy draft horses were used for crossbreeding with the larger southern type Yakut for improvement. The breeding facilities such as Leninski state farm and Karl Marx collective farm in the Yakut ASSR are suggesting pure breeding since the outdated crossbreeding program and extensive husbandry have failed to produce the desired improvements for the breed. The Yakut have also been known to have high milk yields and are a great meat producer.
