The Welsh Mountain Pony originates from the Principality of Wales. This pony is considered in the Welsh Pony and Cob Stud Book to be a Welsh Section A pony. This pony evolved from the primitive British stock. The Welsh Mountain Pony was influenced by a number of breeds before its establishment in the studbook. Arabians, Thoroughbreds, and the old Hackney type improved this pony. Since the studbook opened in 1902 the breeding has been through careful selection and refinement of this breed. The Welsh Mountain Pony was a major influence in each of the other types of Welsh pony breeds. The Welsh Mountain Pony stands on average up to 12 hh and is the smallest of the four different types of Welsh breeds. This pony is a great riding pony and does well in harness. The Welsh Mountain Pony is a fine pony for a firm foundation of horse breeding passing on the greatness of its qualities to its offspring. The Welsh Mountain Pony was principally bred in Wales uplands and hills, which has contributed to its hardiness and character. Today this pony is exported and bred all over the world.
