The Vyatka also known as the Vyatskata and was developed in the natural conditions in what are now the territories of Udmurtia, Kriov and western Perm regions. The Vyatka is in the North Russian Pony group. The native Estonian horses brought by the Novgorod colonists influenced the Vyatka’s development in the 14th century. The Vyatka’s important features are their excellent draft ability, such as adequate speed, extraordinary stamina and good fodder consumption. The Vyatka became the best troika horse in Russia by the first half of the 19th century. Due to the developing industry, transportation and agriculture the numbers of the Vyatka are being reduced. A survey in 1980 showed only about 2000 horses classified as a Vyatka in Udmurtia and the Kirov region.
