The Vladimir Heavy Draft originated in Ivanovo and Vladimir regions through crossbreeding of the larger native horses with Percheron and the Suffolk. The Clydesdale was only used for crossbreeding with the native horses between 1919-1929 and the Shire was used less often. The Vladimir was developed to be a horse of intermediate draft power or less which would have relatively high speed. This new heavy draft breed was recognized in 1946. The Vladimir has a more developed chest with a cleaner and firmer build than compared to the Clydesdale. The smaller size is due to being reared in simple management setting at collective farm studs. These horses have a lively temperament with a sufficient size, heavy build and speed. The Vladimir performs well in walking and trotting draft pulls as well as the endurance pull.
