The Ukrainian Saddle horse was developed since the war by crossbreeding Hungarian mares with Thoroughbred, Trakehner, and Hanoverian stallions. When crossbreeding particular importance was placed to horses with a trace of Russian Saddle horse blood. The Ukrainian Saddle horse breeding program began in the Dnepropetrovsk region and continued at Aleksandriisk, Derkulsk, Dnepropetrovsk and Yagolnitsk studs. These horses are big heavy saddle horses and are bred now generally for sport. The Ukrainian Saddle horses long-term method is pure breeding with corrective crossing with Thoroughbreds. The Ukrainian Saddle horses are used for classic events as well as dressage. These horses have helped the Soviets repeatedly in competitions by coming in first or second in the Olympics and the European and World Championships.
