The Tokara is a rare pony that is a native of Japan. The Tokara was named for the Tokara Islands where these ponies were found. According to Dr. Shigeyuki Hayashida a small group of these ponies where living on the south side of these islands. Around 1897, ten of these native ponies were taken by Kitaiga islanders to Takara. These ponies were used for riding, draft work, agriculture work, transportation, and in processing of sugarcane. They were popular and the breed population reached 100, after World War II the Tokara pony population was greatly reduced. At that time the Kagoshima Prefecture stated the Tokara ponies a prefectural national monument and were to be preserved. The population as of December 1988 was a total of eighty-eight purebred ponies. There are centers for breeding and preservation of the Tokara pony in the Tokara Islands at Kagoshima University, Iriki ranch, Kaimon National Park, and Nakano Island.
