The Timor pony originates from Indonesia on the island of Timor. The ponies were probably introduced to the island from India. The Portuguese colony that arrived in the 16th century and the Dutch who came into influence in the 17th century used these ponies a lot; therefore there were large numbers of ponies on Timor. The island of Timor has large savannahs, which provide excellent grazing land for the ponies. The Timor was exported to Australia in 1803 to help improve the Australian stock with endurance and hardiness. The Timor stands on average up to 12 hh. The Timor has a common head, short neck, straight back, and a tail that is set high. These ponies are very enduring and adaptable. The Timor are good riding ponies as well as under pack. The Timor is also used by the local island people to go places and by the cowboys for working the cattle.
