The exact origin of the Tiger Horse is not known, however speculation leans toward the Spanish. The Tiger Horse may be a descendant of the now extinct Spanish Jennet because of its complex coloring and four-beat gait. The Spanish has also referred to the Tiger Horse as the Caballo Tigre. Around the time of the colonization of North American the Tiger Horse became less popular because of the influence of the Thoroughbred. Many of the Tiger Horses were used in trade and exported to Canadian colonies. The Native American tribes also had some of these Tiger Horses and considered them important. One of the tribes the Nez Perce Tribe was recognized with the development of the breed, but they however deny this. The Native Americans did use them in breeding programs, which tended to be mainly on Spanish horses. The four-beat gait is the Tiger Horses most distinguishable trait. Many cowboys would pay more for these horses for the comfortable riding gait. In 1877 the Nez Perce Tribe was relocated because of the war with the United States Army and the horse herds were dispersed. Some ranchers held some of the horses for the Nez Perce Tribe in hopes of their eventual return. To help preserve the spotted horses in 1938 a registry was developed and called the Appaloosa Horse Club. The breeding programs that this registry underwent eliminated the original characteristics from the Tiger Horse. The Tiger Horse Association was formed in 1994 and set out to preserve the original Tiger Horse. The Tiger Horse stands on average 13 to 16 hh. The Tiger Horse is friendly, sensible, and willing to learn. This horse is sturdy and well balanced. The Tiger Horse must display a Leopard Complex color pattern, minimal Spanish conformation distinctiveness, and a four-beat gait. The Tiger Horse can be found in many different horse breeds including Spanish Mustang, Appaloosa, Paso Breeds, Florida Cracker Horse, Native American herds, and some other Spanish based breeds. The breed has strict conditions on breeding to maintain these unique qualities that the Tiger Horses possess. The Tiger Horse has large eyes, broad forehead, with an undulating Nato profile. The neck is well-arched, well-defined withers, and sloping shoulders. The back is strong, straight sturdy leg, low set tail and sloping croup level with the withers. .
