The Swedish Warmblood originated in Sweden in the Stromholm stud in 1621. The Swedish Warmblood ancestry was imported cavalry horses in the 17th century. In southern Sweden in 1958 a Royal Stud was established at Flyinge in the Province of Skane. Initially many different imported horses were brought from Hungary, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Denmark, Germany, France and England to breed with the local mares. These breeding produced no fixed type. Eventually Spanish and Friesian horses were crossbred with the local mares, which developed physically powerful and lively horses. Arabian, Thoroughbred, Hanoverian, and Trakehner influence was introduced in the 19th and 20th centuries to fix the type and create bigger and more powerful horses. The present day Swedish Warmblood stands on average 16.2 hh. This horse has great conformation, is sound, and multipurpose. The Swedish Warmblood is a very good show jumper, dressage, and event horse. These horses are put through meticulous examination and testing before they can breed. The Swedish Warmblood has been exported in large quantities to the US and Europe.
