The Spanish-Barb was first brought to North America in the 16th century by the Spanish explorers. The Andalusian and Spanish Jennet who evolved from the North African Barb horses influenced the Spanish-Barb. Using the foundation of the Spanish-Barb the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indian horses were developed. A few families and ranchers that were dedicated to preserving the breed were able to save the Spanish-Barb. In 1972 the Spanish-Barb Breeders Association was organized. The Spanish-Barb stands on average 13.3 to 14.1 hh. These horses are exceptional for endurance riding, trail riding, and ranch work. The Spanish-Barb is noted for its even gait and sure-footedness.
