The Soviet Heavy Draft originated in the Khrenov stud where they where developed in the 1880s and 1890s and later also at the Pochinkozsk stud in the Gorki region. To develop the Soviet Heavy Draft the native horses where bred with Belgian Brabancon Draft stallions. Percheron, Suffolk, Danish, and Ardennes also influenced the breed. The Soviet Heavy Draft was recognized as a heavy Draft breed in 1952. The Soviet Heavy Draft is a draft horse that is an excellent utility horse.
