The Skyrian Horse also known as the Skyros Pony originated in Greece on the island of Skyros in the Aegean Sea. The is little to no evidence to support how these horses got there however at one time these ponies lived wild in the mountains. The Skyrian ponies were brought down from the mountain to help with the corn threshing. This breed is similar to the horses depicted in the statuary and friezes of Ancient Greece. This evidence suggests that the Skyrian could be related with the Thessalonian breed and the coat and appearance imply a strong link with the earlier Tarpan breed. The poor soil conditions and hot climate of this area help these ponies to endure with minimal forage yet the amount of nutrition limits the size of the ponies. The height of this pony is on average about 11 hh. The Skyrian is good tempered and a fine jumper. Today the Skyrian is still a utility horse. These little ponies have great stamina and can carry weight. They Skyrian Horse are also used for light riding and as a draft pony. A breed preservation society was formed devoted to improving the quality and size of this Greek pony.
