The Shagya Arab originated from Hungary. Arabian horses arrived to this area between 1526 and 1686 during the Turkish occupation of Hungary. In 1789 the Babolna Stud Farm was founded and bred Arabian horses and its own stock. The Babolna Stud since 1870 has bred Arabian horses exclusively. These horses were increased in body size, but still having the nobility and character of the Arabian. This breed was just called Arab until 1982 when they took the name of Shagya Arab after the stallion with the most populous strain. The Shagya Arab eventually became internationally recognized. The Shagya Arab stands on average 15 to 16 hh. This horse has a concave profile, small ears, bid eyes, wide nostrils, with long neck. The legs are strong and the withers medium high. The Shagya Arab resembles the desert Arab yet is bigger in mass. The Shagya Arab is used to help improve other breeds by adding muscle, conformation, and elegance. The Shagya Arabs are used in harness, light saddle, and as a sport horse. Their dispositions are vivacious, enduring, and hard, but can be docile and managed. The Shagya Arabs are considered rare and strict selection in breeding is involved to maintain their qualities.
