The Selle Francais also known as the Cheval de Selle Francais or the French Saddle Horse originated in Normandy in the stud of Le Pin. The breeding of the Selle Francais began in the early 19th century when local Norman mares were used as base stock. The mares were then bred with English Thoroughbreds, half-bred, and Norfolk Roadster stallions. These horses were considered to be French half-bred competition horses until December of 1958 when they became known as the Cheval de Selle Francais. After the Second World Ward the base stock of Norman mares were significantly decreased. The breeding once again continued, due to the demand, with crossbreeding from the Norman mares and Thoroughbred stallions such as Ultimate and Furioso. The Selle Francais stands on average 16hh. The Selle Francais is a great competition horse. These horses are used in racing as well as show jumping. The Selle Francais have been used in the French Olympic Teams.
