The Schleswig is a Danish heavy horse breed, which originated in Denmark. The Schleswig Draft Horse was created based on the Jutland Heavy Horse. The Yorkshire Coach Horse and Thoroughbreds were also an influence to help reduce the coarseness of the Schleswig’s coat. There was a selective breeding program started in the 1860’s based on the Jutland stallion, Munkedal. The Scleswig breed was recognized in 1888. The Schleswig was crossbred with the Jutlands frequently until 1938. The Schleswig Draft Horse stands on average 15.2 to 16 hh. These heavy horses were used to pull buses and trams, however, with the invention of machines and their uses in the modern society the numbers of the Schleswig Draft Horses have decreased significantly.
