The Sardinian originated from Sardinia. The Sardinian was based on Arabian and Barb stock. By the 15th century, Ferdinand of Spain introduced his breed of Spanish horse stallions, Andalusians, to the Sardinian horses and a distinctive type emerged. These horses were strong saddle horses with endurance. After Sardinia was passed to the House of Savoy in 1720 much of the horse breeding declined. In 1908 Arabians were brought in to improve the Sardinian stock. The Sardinian stands on average 15.2 hh. This horse is usually brown or bay in color. The modern Sardinian has a definite eastern look and is smart and generally fearless. The Sardinian has enormous jumping talent and a satisfactory riding conformation.
