The Sanhe originated from China in the eastern Inner Mongolia. The Sanhe horses are one of the best horses in China. The Liao Dynasty a thousand years ago was known for the quality of its horses. The Qing Dynasty bred the Soulun breed in China. Russian Zabaikal horses were brought to China in 1904 and 1905 and were crossed with local breeds. In 1917 the Russian settlers brought Orlov and Bechuk and horses to the area. After the Ministry of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of China did an assessment of the crossbreeds in 1955 they created two stud farms and developed the breed of Sanhe. The Sanhe stands on average 14.3 to 15 hh and is a well-made horse. The Sanhe gives a smooth ride with good action. These horses have a sloping shoulder, heavy neck, compact, strong legs, good muscles, and hard hooves. The Sanhe is mainly used for racing, harness and saddle work.
