The Sandalwood pony was originally developed on the islands of Sumba and Sumbawa. The Dutch improved this pony with Arabian blood. This pony is named for the wood that is the primary export of Sumbawa and Sumba. The Sandalwood pony has been exported to Austrailia, Thailand, and Malaysia. In Austrailia the Sandalwood pony was mainly used as a children’s pony. In Thailand the Sandalwood pony were used in racing. In Malaysia the Sandalwood pony were crossbred with Thoroughbreds to produce better, faster horses. The Sandalwood pony stands on average 13.1 hh and has distinct Arabian qualities, such as tail carriage and is noticeable in the head. The Sandalwood pony is fast and very energetic.
