The Russian Heavy Draft was developed in the Ukraine in the early-1900s about the same time as the Vladimir. The Russian Heavy Draft was created at the Khrenov and Derkul state studfarms. The base stock consisted of Ukrainian mares that were crossbred with Ardennes stallions from Sweden. Eventually they were crossbred with Belgian Heavy Drafts, Percherons, and Orlov Trotters. The Russian Heavy Draft was known by the name of Russian Ardennes until the 1920s. The Russian Heavy Draft breed was finally recognized and registered in 1952. The Russian Heavy Draft stands on average 14.2 to 14.3 hh and matures very quickly at the age of 18 months. This horse also lives a long time and can be at stud even in its twenties. The Russian Heavy Draft has a notable head, wide chest, heavy build, strong frame, with short legs and medium sized hooves. The Russian Heavy Draft is suitable for being a workhorse in the agricultural industry.
