The Rhinelander originated in Germany and is a competition horse. This breed is fairly new and was developed in 1970. This horse was created through the use of the Rhineland heavy draft horse or the old Rhenish German. These horses were once popular and now were no longer useful. The breeders took the lightest of these horses and bred them with Thoroughbreds, Hanoverians, and Trakehners. The resulting mares were then bred with selective half-bred stallions creating the Rhinelander. The Rhinelander stands on average 16.2 hh and is an unremarkable yet beautiful horse. This riding horse has a calm temperament, good action and is a great horse compatible to the standard rider. These horses are mainly bred in the Rhineland, Saxony and Westphalia regions of Germany.
