The Pottok originated in France. These ponies are mainly found in the mountainous provinces of Soule, Labourd, and Basse-Navarre. The Pottok are descendants of the primitive horses and were influenced by crossbreeding with Welsh Section B stallions and Arabians. The Pottok Ponies were used for smuggling goods up until the Second World War. Today there are three types of the Pottok. The Standard Pottok stands on average 11.1 to 13 hh. The Double Pottok stands on average 12.3 to 14.2 hh and the Pinto Pottok averages 11.1 to 13 hh. The Pottok is less distinguished than the neighboring Landais. The Pottok’s are used in harness and as children’s ponies. The Pottok was used for breeding to help develop the French Riding Pony or the Poney Francais de Selle.
