The Poitevin Horse, also known as the Mulassier, has been bred in France since the 17th century when it was brought to the Marais Poitevin. This horse was brought to the area initially to help drain the marshes of La Vendee and Poitou. The Poitevin mares are bred with the huge donkey, Baudet de Poitou, to produce the Poitevin mules. These Poitevin mules are hardy and sound and valuable in the market. To maintain the breed the mares are also bred back with the Poitevin stallions and any surplus animals could be sold through the meat market. The Poitevin Horse is very strong and is usually dun in color. The Poitevin Horse is unappealing in appearance and has only a small number of positive conformational features. It has a large body, heavy head, with shoulders straight, and large hooves. The Poitevin Horse is very slow moving and similarly is their temperament slow and somber.
