The Pindos Pony also known as the Thessalonian originated in Thessaly and Epirus in Greece. There is little doubt that the Pindos Pony is directly descended from the old Thessalonian breed as well as has acquired traits from the ancient Peloponnese, Arcadian, Epidaurian, and other forgotten strains. The breeding areas of these ponies were in the lower lands of Greece. This area was known for its harsh climatic conditions, poor soil, and meager vegetation. Because of these conditions the size of the ponies were kept small. Today the Pindos Pony is used for light draft work on farms and forestry and as a pack pony in the mountains. The Pindos pony usually stands about 13 hh. These ponies have great stamina, are tough and are able to endure on minimal food supplies and have a reputation for being stubborn. The Pindos Pony is a useful riding and driving pony.
