The Peruvian Paso, also known as the Peruvian Stepping Horse, originated in Peru and is the most well known of the Peruvian breed. This breed was developed from the horses brought to Peru in 1531 by Francisco Pizarro. Over 300 years of skillfully selective breeding has helped develop the Peruvian Paso. The Peruvian is considered to be three quarters Barb influence and one quarter Andalusian.The Peruvian Paso stands on average 14 to 15 hh. This horse is noted for it’s natural, yet distinctive lateral gait. The Peruvian Paso can maintain an 11 mph speed over rough mountainous terrain and tops out at a speed of 13 mph. The comfort level of the rider at this speed is smooth. The Peruvian Paso comes in all colors and are also bred in Columbia and the United States.
