The Paint originates in the United States of America. The American Paint Horse Association registers these horses based on strict criteria. The Paint horses must have been bred from Quarter Horse, Thoroughbred, or Paint Horse stock. There are two types of markings for the Paints: Tobiano and Overo. The Tobiano markings are large white markings running over the back evenly arranged. The Overo is less common and the white markings run up from the belly with markings rarely being on the back. The Overo horses usually have a white head and dark legs with blue eyes. The Paint stands on average 14 to 17 hh. This horse is used as a typical western horse and for all forms of western riding. The Paint is basically a Quarter Horse with specific color characteristics. The forehead is broad, Arabian nose, and muscular quarters. The same quick speed and smooth gait of the Quarter Horse is often seen in Paints. The Paint horses also have the same temperament and character as the Quarter Horses.
