The North Swedish Horses are bred in North Sweden mainly at the principal stud farm of Wangen. The North Swedish Horses are related to the ancient Scandinavian breeds and have close ties to the Dole Gudbrandsdal. The North Swedish Horses were a mixture of several breeds up until the end of the 19th century. At this time a society was formed and created firm selective breeding. The horse breeding in Northern Europe and Scandinavian areas are influenced by the need for agricultural and forestry horses to work in difficult conditions. The North Swedish Horse has exceptional hardiness due to this factor. The North Swedish Horse is regarded as a coldblood and is not considered to be in the heavy horse category. The North Swedish Horse stands on average 15.3 hh and is a compact and active horse. These horses are used extensively in forestry. The North Swedish Horse has a square-like head, fairly sloped shoulders, thick neck, long back, with a powerful body and short legs. These horses are long-lived and are noted for having a great disposition. The North Swedish Horse is said to be immune to most of the common equine diseases.
