The Nordland is said to have originated in the very early times somewhere in the east before coming to Norway. The Nordland lived in the northern part of Norway for centuries. The Nordland ponies developed differently in different districts resulting in two types of ponies because of crossbreeding with other breeds. The one from Lyngen in northern Troms is larger and sturdier and the one from Norland in the district of Lofoten is smaller with a heavy mane and tail. The Nordlands numbers declined after World War II and the breed was near extinction. Due to the sparse numbers, breeding the Nordland was difficult. The two types of Nordland were crossbred and distinctions between the two types are less evident today. The pony is eager to work, easily trained, active and with a good temperament. The Nordland ponies are used in jump racing, show riding, pack horse, driving, and for riding. These ponies are long-lived with relatively no health problems. The Nordland is also known as the Northland Pony, Lyngen, or Lyngshest
