The New Forest Pony originated in the Forest of England in southwest Hampshire. There have been efforts to improve the stock since 1016. During 1208 Welsh mares were put in the Forest to breed. To improve the stock a Thoroughbred, Marske the sire of Eclipse, bred with Forest mares for a short time around 1765. In the nineteenth century Queen Victoria brought in Arabian and Barb stallions. Lord Cecil and Lord Lucas improved the New Forest Pony the best by crossing a hodgepodge of blood. The New Forest Pony was crossed with the Highlands, Dales, Dartmoors, Fells, Exmoors, and Welsh Ponies as well as an imported Basuto Pony. Today's New Forest Pony maintains the special qualities and movements inherited from its natural environment. These ponies are easy to handle and are not afraid of human contact. They are great performers of polo, dressage, and jumping and ideal for riding and driving.
