The National Show Horse was created in 1981 from two foundation breeds the Arabian for its beauty, elegance and endurance and the American Saddlebred for its size and high-stepping motion. With the birth of the new breed the National Show Horse Registry (NSHR) was founded to meet a growing need for beautiful show horses with athletic ability, with talents in the show ring and for a broader base for the show horse industry. The NSHR has made is possible for the employment of a variety of crosses between the Arabian and the American Saddlebred to produce a breed that continues to exceed its own standards. The National Show Horse Registry developed a prize money system to generate renewed enthusiasm for exhibitors and spectators. This fresh atmosphere in the show ring reflects the enthusiasm created by horses with new concepts and formats. This would create broader public appeal and make it financially satisfying for exhibitors to show their horses.
