The Morgan originated in 1789 in Springfield, Massachussetts from a horse originally called "Figure" and then became known as Justin Morgan after his owner. He was then moved to Vermont where he worked hard and was admired for his amazing attributes. Justin Morgan never lost in hauling matches or races in saddle or harness. He could even pull a log not even a draft horse could budge. Countless mares were bred to him no matter the size or the type of horse the outcome always inherited his image and abilities. Incredibly every horse registered today traces back to Justin Morgan through his be most famous sons: Sherman, Woodbury, and Bullrush. As America grew so did the Morgan plowing, hauling and clearing woodland. The Morgans also had style and elegance and were in demand in the 1800s. They were also used as calvalry remounts. The Morgan breed can be linked to the evolution of the Standardbred, the Saddlebred, and the Tennessee Walking Horse. Today the Morgan's are used for mounted police squads, therapeutic riding horses, dressage, pulling, and other competitions.
