The Lusitano originated in Portugal and is very similar to the Spanish Andalusian. There is a possible Arabian outcross resulting in the Lusitano's profile being more convex and body higher off the ground then the modern Spanish Andalusian. These horses are used in the bullfighting ring. In Portugal they do not kill the bull, so the horses have to remain calm, courageous, quick, and agile to avoid injury. They are schooled in advanced movements to avoid a charging bull and work as a team with the rejoneadores. The Lusitano was also used for Portuguese cavalry mount, light farm work, saddle, and carriage horse. It is very smart, cooperative, and receptive breed with the discipline of the Haute Ecole. The Lusitano is in demand because of these attributes to be a dressage horse.
