The Losino originated for the north province of Spain in the Losa Valley. The Losino is related to the Pottok, Sorraia, Galician pony, Asturian pony, Navarre, Merens, and Thieldon. The Losino was used for crossbreeding with donkeys for mule production and with horse meat breeds. Due to modernization the Losino dwindled in numbers to around 30 horses in 1986. In Pancorbo the Losino Horse breeding center was reestablished to help the breed. As of 1999 the population of the Losino are around 200 horses.The Losino has a large head, small ears, strong neck, wide chest, and broad back. The Losino are used for harnessing, junior horseback riding, and rural and mountain trail riding. The Losino Horse Breeding Association was formed in 1988. A Losino is eliminated if any of the following defects occur: white spots of coat except one on forehead, suspect of crossbreeding, scattered hoofs, square or straight rump, and any variant of the horses coat that is not black. .
