The Landais originated in the south of France in the forest regions of Landes. This pony is though to have been descended from the primitive Tarpan. In the 19th century Arabian influence was introduced to the Landais breed and then once more in 1913. The Landais breed was almost extinct after the Second World War. There were only 150 Landais ponies remaining. To reduce the chances of inbreeding the Welsh Section B stallions were introduced to the Landais as well as some influence from the Arabians. Today the Landais stands on average 11.3 to 13.1 hh. This pony has many Arabian qualities and the pointed ears from the Welsh ponies. The Landais is a quiet riding pony with intellect and can easily adjust to changes in temperature. The Landais was the foundation stock for the French Riding Pony or Poney Francais de Selle.
