The Konik originates from the Balkan region in Poland and is bred mainly at the state stud in Jezewice and at Popielno. The Konik is closely related to the Hucul and the Bosnian Pony found in this region and along the Adriatic coast to the Black Sea. The Konik is a descendant of the Tarpan and maintains a lot of its characteristics. This pony stands on average 13 hh and has a black dorsal line with brown-dun coloring. The head is in proportion, short neck with upright shoulders and low withers, body is sturdy, tail is set high, and forelegs are strong. The breed is prone to sickle-hocks. The Konik works well on small amounts of rations and has a good temperament. Also known as Konik Polski
