The Kiger Mustang is a descendant from the original Spanish bloodline of the Mustangs of the American west. The Spanish influence had been lost or weakened in the Mustangs of today. The Kiger Mustang was found in 1977 and brought in from remote Beaty Butte region in Lake County, Oregon. These Kiger Mustang have a typical Barb head and with an average weight of between 700 and 800 pounds. The horses were of a dun coloration with dorsal stripes and zebra striped legs and seemed to work naturally with cattle, which would be consistent with their Spanish bloodlines. Two groups of horses were collected from this area, each group having the same attributes of size and color. To conserve these distinctive horses 20 animals were released on the East Kiger Herd Management Area and the other seven were turned out about five miles to the northeast on the Riddle Mountain Herd Management Area. To protect the breeding stock bloodline measures were taken to make certain there were no other horses in either area.
