The Kerry Bog Pony originates in Ireland. This pony is rather small and stands on average between 10 and 11 hh. The Kerry Bog Pony was used for transporting peat and turf in baskets in from the bogs. In less boggy areas the Kerry Bog Pony would pull carts filled full of peat and turf. This turf was used in houses as domestic fuel. There were only 20 ponies left in Ireland by 1994. These ponies usually have names related to the bog flora and fauna to symbolize their heritage such as Bog Cotton or Brave Badger. The Kerry Bog Pony Society was eventually formed.
