The Karabakh is a mountain horse, which originated in the Karabakh uplands in Azerbaijan between the Kura and Araks Rivers. The Karabakh is linked to the primitive Mongolian type steppe horse and is also associated with its neighbor the Kabardin Horse. The Karabakh has been crossed with Arabians and associated Arabian breeds as well as the Akhal-Teke. The Karabakh stands on average 14 hh and is a fine light riding horse. This horse is a quality mountain horse. The Karabakh usually has sickle-shaped hocks or hind legs. The shape of these hind legs helps the horse to work better over the terrain of the mountains.
