The Karabair originated in Central Asia in Uzbekistan and northern Tajikistan. The Karabair is one of the oldest breeds dating back to 600 BC and the time of the Persians. The Karabair has been influenced greatly by the Arabians as well as crossing of southern oriental breeds with more primitive steppe horses. This outer influence resulted in a small, fast moving riding horse with stamina and courage. The Karabair are sound and well built, but can have a predisposition to have sickle-hocks. The Karabair stands on average 15 hh. This horse is used under saddle and in harness. The Karabairs live and are bred alternately in the foothills and on the mountains. These horses are bred by 50 percent of the Uzbeck people. Most of these people are still nomadic and live in the shrub and steppe country in order to have good grass quality for the horses to feed on. The Karabair are also bred and used in the national kokpar games.
