The Java pony originates in the Indonesia archipelago on the island of Java and they are quite numerous in number. The Dutch were in Bantam on Java in the early 1600’s to set up the eastern headquarters of the Dutch East India Company. During this time trading was prevalent and Arabian and Barb horses were brought in during these early days. Both the Arabian and the Barb horses had an effect on the Java stock, however it is not very noticeable. The Java inherited the strength and resistance to heat from the Arabians and their unbelievable hardiness from the Barb. The Java pony stands on average 12.2 hh and is more powerfully built than most other island ponies, except the Batak and Sandalwood. The Java’s conformation is not very good and has many deficiencies. These ponies, however, are very eager and tireless. The Java ponies can be ridden, but are mainly used for drawing taxi carts with people or goods.
