The Irish Draft originated in Ireland and is a result of crossing the native stock with other breeds of horses. This stock was improved with the Spanish Horse. From the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1712 the Irish Draft was crossbred with the European horse, mostly French and Flemish, for their size and personality. They were further upgraded by more eastern and Spanish, or Andalusian blood. The offspring of this crossbreeding were used for saddle, harness, and farming purposes. The Irish Draft is used for hunting purposes and is known to get across country through difficult obstacles. Their bone, substance, and size were also helped through the rich limestone pastures where they are kept as well as the climate. The Irish Draft was eventually crossed with the Thoroughbred to give quality, added scope and speed without detracting from its hunting qualities.
