The Iomud originated in the Tashauz oasis in southern Turkmenia. The Iomud descended from the ancient Turkmenian horses and was developed by the Iomud tribe. The Iomud was influenced by Arabian blood in the 14th century. The Iomud has a clean-cut head, firm back, fine legs, and is a long-lived horse. The Iomud herds are kept in the desert and semi desert areas. The population of these horses has decreased significantly and in 1983 a stud farm was opened in Turkmenia. This stud farm along with a conservation farm in the Kyzl-Atrek district is trying to protect and restore the Iomud breed.
