The Indian Half-bred originated from India. Crossbreeding Thoroughbreds with country-bred mares developed these horses. The Indian Half-bred was primarily bred at Indian army remount depot at Saharanpur and army studs like Babugarh. India’s climate is not the best suited for horse breeding, that is why Thoroughbreds were chosen for crossbreeding. The Thoroughbreds adjust to India’s climate easier than warmblood breeds. The Indian Half-bred stands on average 15.2 hh. The modern Indian Half-bred has improved and has ample bone with sturdy legs and hooves that can stand hours of hard work. These horses are both strong and enduring. The police forces and mounted army still breed and maintain the Indian Half-bred horse. A small percentage of these horses are involved in civilian activities such as competitive riding and riding clubs.
