The Indian Country-bred is thought to originate from India and is a pony that is quite common throughout India. It was crossbred from the local stock and Arabians. These small horses were first sent to Australia in 1788 to form the base of breeding for the Australian Waler. The Indian Country-bred does not have very good conformation, but is capable of working hard on very basic food. More recently the Indian Country-bred has had some influence with the Thoroughbreds.
