The Hucul originates from the Carpathian Mountains. In the 19th century the breed was selectively bred at the Luczyna stud and then in Siary near Gorlice in Poland. The Hucul ponies are though to be directly descended from the ancient Tarpan. There is also some suggestion of an influence of eastern blood. There genetic evidence associating the Hucul to the Asian Wild Horse in the shape of the pony’s head and the yellow-dun coloring. These ponies were distinguished for there ability to carry heavy packs over difficult mountain terrain sometimes covered in snow and ice. The modern Hucul are still much regarded in the highland farms of southern Poland. These ponies are used in harness and under saddle. The Hucul are also docile, strong and willing. The Hucul stands on average between 12.1 and 13.1 hh. There are three different types of the Hucul however these are very mixed. The Hucul are usually a dun color but pinto is also common. The mane and tail is coarse and thick. They are solid and short and sometimes a prone to sickle-hocks that occur often in mountain breeds. The Hucul is bred in the Carpathian Mountains as well as throughout Central Europe.
