The Hokkaido used to be known as the Dosanko and came from northeast China. The Hokkaido lives on the Pacific coast of the island of Hokkaido in Japan. They are descended from ponies of Korea, Mongolia, and China. The Hokkaido were said to have been brought to Hokkaido by fishermen for transportation and left on the island during the winter during the 1600’s and later. These small horses survived the winters on almost nothing but snow and bamboo grass in the mountains on which most feed mainly on today. The Hokkaido is the most abundant of remaining ancient Japanese ponies. The Hokkaido stands on average 13 hh to 13.2 hh and used in farming, under pack, pleasure mounts and hauling. They are also used in the mountains for heavy transportation and until recently in small coalmines.
