The Hessen originates from Germany in the state of Hessen, between the Weser and Neckar. During the first half of the 20th century breeding of this horse was very important. The draft version of the Hessen that was developed by crossbreeding Holstein and Oldenburg was used as a basis for the Hessen. The Hessen stands on average 16.2 hh. The Hessen is a large, strong, good-looking, adaptable riding horse with great conformation. The Hessens’ long life and good health can be attributed to the harsh breeding conditions in the state of Hessen. The Hessens’ gait is elastic and free moving. The Hessen breeding today consists of crossbreeding to the Hanoverian, Thoroughbred, Trakehner, and Holstein breeds. The Hessen makes a wonderful show jumping, dressage, riding and sport horse.
