The Hequ originated in China in the border area of Qinghai, Gansu, and Sichuan provinces. During the 600s to the 900s horses were imported in large numbers to provide transportation for the Calvary. During the late 1200s to the mid 1300s the Mongolian stock influenced the Hequ. The Hequ was previously known as Nanfan until the name was changed in 1954. The Hequ is considered a draft breed. These horses are a sturdy built animal used in pack, draft, racing, and riding. The Hequ is broken down into three categories of horses. The Jiode type stands on average about 13.3 hh and is mainly found in the southern region of the Gansu province. The Suoke type carries tail high with big head and ears. The Suoke type is mainly found in the western areas of the Sichuan province. The Kesheng type is mostly Mongolian influence and is located in the province of Qinghai in Kesheng Mongolian Autonomous Region.
