The Haflinger is bred around the village of Hafling in the Etschlander Mountains in the southern Austrian Tyrol. The stallion for which all purebred Haflingers can be traced is the Arabian El Bedavi XXII. The main Haflinger stud is at Jenesien. The base stock was bred with the Alpine Heavy Horse, now extinct, and a related pony breed. The Haflinger was also crossbred with the Noriker Horses, Hucul, Bosnian, and Konic Ponies. The Haflinger is extremely strong, sturdy, multitalented, and a willing worker. These ponies are used for both riding and driving, pulling wheeled vehicles or a sleigh, work in forestry, farm, or on steep mountain slopes. The young Haflingers are raised in the high Alpine Pastures to help develop their heart and lungs for the thin air.
