The Gotland Pony also known as the Skogsruss Pony originated on Gotland Island off the Swedish coast in the Baltic Sea. This pony native of Sweden lived in a semi-feral secluded state on the island and in the forest of Lojsta on the Swedish mainland. The Gotland has probably existed since the Stone Age and is most likely to be descended from the primitive Tarpan like that of the Hucul and Konik ponies of Poland with which the Gotland resembles. The Gotland was pretty much isolated from other breeds until the 19th century when there was selective breeding with some eastern breeds such as the Arabian. The Gotland was once used for farm work, but now is mainly used as a riding pony in jumping and trotting events. The Gotland’s gallop is labored and restricted yet the walk and trot are fast. The Gotland’s have a small, narrow build with good tough hooves. These ponies reach an average height of around 12 to 12.2 hh. They have great stamina and a strong constitution. Today the Gotland Pony is bred on Gotland Island, Scandinavia, and in Sweden.
