The Garranos Pony also known as the Minho, originated in the northern valleys of Garrano do Minho and Traz dos Montes in Portugal. The Garranos is related to the Sorraia, which also resided in the Iberian Peninsula. The Garranos area thought to be one of the first horse breeds domesticated in Europe. This breed of horse is said to have come from the primitive Tarpan with a small influence from that of the Asiatic Wild horse. The Garranos Pony was later improved with influence from the Arabian stock. This influence of Arabian blood has made the present day Garranos different from its previous appearance.
